The PD-1 (programmed death) drug, if I recall correctly, changes the the status of the immune system killer t-cells while bavi simply alerts the immune system that, hey, this is no longer self (infected or cancer cells) and to ATTACK! Again, the PD-1 and PD-L1 have resulted in patient deaths, probably due to immune over stimulation...

The drugs work by disabling a brake that prevents the immune system from attacking cancer cells. The brake is a protein on immune system cells called programmed death 1 receptor, or PD-1.
