p53 is what we call "the guardian of the genome" its basically the most important gene in your cell in terms of protecting you against cancer. The p53 in basic terms will cause genomic changes in cells to lead to apoptosis (death of the cell) and therefore prevents the mutated cell becoming cancerous (a cell is not cancerous until it undergoes a certain number of mutations depending on the time of cancer)
