"A Chicago investment group committed to buy up to $30 million in StemCells Inc. stock over three years, including $3 million right away.

Proceeds from the current and future stock sales to Lincoln Park Capital Fund LLC will be used for general corporate purposes by Newark-based StemCells (NASDAQ: STEM).

The $3 million in shares that Lincoln Park will immediately buy were priced at $1.823 per share.

It is the second deal in a few months involving Lincoln Park and a Bay Area biotech company. In April, the fund committed $18.5 million to Hayward, CA, lupus drug developer Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc."
