Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE) notched a high-profile legal victory against Apple Inc. (AAPL) Tuesday, when the United States International Trade Commission said it found some of the iPhone maker's products violated a Samsung patent.
The commission issued an exclusion order barring the import into the U.S. of a set of Apple mobile devices, including versions of the iPhone and iPad made to work on AT&T Inc.'s (T) network. Among them are the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, the iPad 3G, the iPad 2 3G and the iPad 3. The latest Apple products, the iPhone 5 and the fourth-generation of the iPad, were unaffected.
" Apple failed to prove an affirmative defense," the commission said in its ruling.
Representatives for Apple and Samsung did not respond to requests for comment.
President Barack Obama has 60 days to review the exclusion order, which takes effect if he doesn't veto it. Apple can also appeal the ruling to federal courts.
The case is one of many that are being waged in courtrooms throughout the world. Samsung and Apple , in addition to other tech giants like Google Inc.'s ( GOOG) Motorola unit, have locked horns and argued in courts that each of the company's products infringe one another's patents.
