Summary
Last year, telcos were issuing many requests for proposal to equipment and software vendors as they investigated what was available for Telco TV services. They ran lab trials and limited market trials. In 2005, many of these telcos have commercially launched services or announced their plans to launch in 2006. The pace is unprecedented in TelcoTV.

The increasing number of deployments, the details of which are provided in the report, will drive the growth of the homes served by Telco TV offerings. Telcos who deployed earlier are also expanding the reach of their services. Telco customers are taking note of the new services and signing up. We expect worldwide TelcoTV subscribers will reach 32 million in 2009.

The report provides five-year subscriber, homes served, annual ARPU, and annual service revenue forecasts for the TelcoTV market. Additionally, equipment and software vendor revenue for broadcast TV content processing, on demand content processing, middleware, and content security are provided from 2004 to 2009.

Summary
Cable TV operators, particularly those in North America, continue to expand the availability of Video-on-Demand (VOD) service. Over the past two years, the time-shifting video service has become a popular marketing tool for the cable industry. At the same time, cable operators continue to experiment with different programming packages and VOD marketing strategies. This experimentation has led to an important development: the growth in Free-on-Demand (FOD) cable services and content.

This report covers VOD services provided by cable TV operators. It examines the relationship between interactive TV services and VOD, and discusses the different types of VOD services that are available. The report specifically covers the packaging and economics of VOD services, looks at the business model of VOD, and provides a comprehensive look at current cable-based VOD deployments.

The report also provides the results of a US consumer survey. The survey asked over 1,700 US households about their awareness, and their use, of cable-based VOD services. The report also provides North American and worldwide forecasts for VOD subscribers and service revenues through the year 2009.

Summary
Qbit, LLC, based in Bethesda, Maryland, has been operating in “stealth” mode for several years working on a series of algorithms for lossless data reduction for video, audio and image files. They are finally ready to introduce themselves.

A few key market segments are likely to provide early revenue opportunities: medical applications, video surveillance, movie and TV production, storage of large amounts of financial records, and geothermal mapping in the search for oil deposits. Non-commercial opportunities for government agencies could also be important.

However, the Qbit approach appears to have further reach than just the professional markets. Qbit believes that their technology can eventually take a High Definition TV program that, today, requires 15 Megabits/second (Mb/s) for transmission, and reduce the bit rate down to less than 4 Mb/s. Cable TV systems, Satellite TV networks, and TelcoTV services could quadruple the amount of HDTV programming they deliver, without the need to increase the amount of bandwidth they have available.
Qbit’s technology could have positive effects on many market segments.

Summary
Building new Digital Video Headends and upgrading existing facilities will reinvigorate the business of many major telecommunications equipment manufacturers.

Internet Protocol enables Cable TV, IP-TV, Digital Terrestrial TV and Digital Satellite services to extend their brand beyond consumer’s TV sets. The winners in this market will be those who can keep their “brand name” in front of consumers at home, at work, at play, on vacation, in transit, and even when they are temporarily away from the main service provider’s service area.

The power of Gigabit Ethernet is that “GigE” makes it easy for a digital TV service operator to segment its large systems into distinct “zones of operation” that permit a single headend to provide “customized” video programming services that have unique programming choices for each zone.

We expect the value of various categories of Digital Video Headends, and their GigE and Internet Protocol components, to surge past US$ 2.6 Billion by 2009. Compared with indicators from other telecommunications segments, a CAGR of 32.3% is astounding!

Summary
In-Stat's sixth annual survey of US Cable TV system operators shows that total Cable TV subscriber growth is flattening out, but long-term revenue gains can still be obtained by Cable TV operators who continue expanding their mix of new digital services.

Twenty-three respondents have more than one hundred thousand subscribers on their systems, six have more than 50,000 subscribers, and six have between 20,000 up to 49,999 subscribers. Two thirds of respondents said that 100% of their subscribers have access to digital Cable services. More than three-fourths of respondents indicated that they have at least 750 MegaHertz of bandwidth available on their systems.

Key results from this extensive survey include:
- High-Speed Data (HSD) via cable modem continues to grow
- High Definition TV And PVRs are the “hot” new services
- Bundling helps make Cable a preferred telecoms provider
- Voice telephone services are being deployed
- CableCARD devices are being supported, but attitudes are mixed
- Capital Expenditures trend appears to be flat

Cable operators need to obtain more revenue from each subscriber that they still have. Seventy-eight percent of our respondents reported an increase in their ARPU over the past twelve months.

Respondents reported that they are well aware of looming competition for digital video services being planned by their local telephone companies. Twenty-one respondents expect to see competing video services, mainly from Verizon or SBC.

Summary
Forget the triple play, and four-play, we now have “multi-play.”

The capabilities of Gigabit Ethernet Video Routers are expanding to support advanced audio and video compression methods, and widening their features and functions to provide fully-converged Internet Protocol networks that are capable of delivering an extended range of multiple services, which go far beyond the so-called “triple play” of just video, voice and high speed data.

Gigabit Ethernet Video Routers are creating completely converged IP networks that can be re-configured “on the fly” to provide a wide range of services to subscribers. The trick is to get the right “bits” moved through the network, at the lowest cost, to obtain the maximum value from each service, and from each customer.

GigE Video Routers will double their market with IP-TV.

New Internet Protocol TV services (IP-TV) use the same core technology, management software, and network control systems that have been developed for digital Cable services. We believe IP-TV applications will double the value of the Gigabit Ethernet Video Router market.

We expect this market will account for more than $930 million (US) during 2008.

Summary
Interactive Program Guides (IPGs) will become the “entertainment portal” for nearly all consumers.

We believe that three key companies will ultimately have the staying power to succeed over the long term in the IPG space: Gemstar-TV Guide, Microsoft and Tribune Media Services. There will still be sustainable business models for a host of smaller companies who can identify and command key niche opportunities.

New geographic regions are becoming key growth opportunities for IPGs.

In addition, Consumer Electronics Products are becoming targets for embedded IPGs that have program listings delivered using broadcast datacasting services, or wireless broadband connection services.

TV Guide is still in a position to define the agenda for the IPG market. Their large installed base, key customer relationships, and the power of TV Guide’s brand name will keep them in command for the immediate future. Microsoft and Tribune Media Services will be able to mount effective competition, and drive the industry forward.

We expect the worldwide IPG market will grow to nearly $1 Billion (US) during 2008.

Summary
Consumer Video Subscription Services Over IP Networks are more than just movie and TV shows.
Sports video subscription services are emerging as a strong niche in sports leagues, and sports TV networks can deliver video over the Internet as a means to boost ticket sales or TV viewership. Also, as an attraction to get consumers to visit their web site and purchase merchandise,
General Interest Video Subscription Services are evolving into a straightforward “upgrade” service for broadband service providers.

The “Other” Video Subscription Services are evolving and adapting to changing technologies and newly emerging market conditions. Microsoft’s MSN has inaugurated a deal with Major League Baseball to provide “content” from baseball games, delivered as a subscription service to broadband subscribers. New handheld Portable Media Center products will create strong market growth for these “other” service models.

The annual value of Consumer Video Subscription Services delivered over Internet Protocol networks will grow to $4.6 Billion (US) during 2008.

Summary
Cable TV operators continue to increase the availability of Video-on-Demand (VOD) services: as of mid-2004, approximately 50% of all US cable TV systems were offering VOD, and over 5 million cable TV households were regularly using the service to watch movies, view packaged premium programming, and even check out “free” shows and events. However, there are still questions about the best way to position the service, particulary in light of cable subscriber concerns about the scarcity of compelling content.

This report covers VOD services provided by cable TV operators. It describes the relationship between interactive TV services and VOD, and discusses the different types of VOD services that are available. The report specifically examines the packaging and economics of VOD services, looks at the business model challenges facing VOD, and provides a comprehensive look at current cable-based VOD deployments.

The report also provides the results of two VOD surveys. The first survey polled US cable TV systems operators about the current and future availability of VOD services. The second survey asked over one thousand US households about their awareness, and their use, of cable-based VOD services.

In addition, the report provides North American and worldwide forecasts for VOD subscribers and service revenues through the year 2008.

Summary
Today, telcos are offering digital TV services over ADSL, VDSL, and fiber networks. Improvements in the data rates and reach of DSL will help telcos reach more customers with the right amount of bandwidth. At the same time, advances in video compression will reduce the “right” amount of bandwidth needed for each video stream.

More telcos will add digital TV to their services each year. Equipment suppliers are reporting increased activity, giving rise to our expectations for over 100% growth in subscribers for 2004.

This report discusses telco TV networks and services. We provide five-year digital telco TV subscriber, homes served, ARPU and revenue forecasts, as well as a forecast for TV subscribers and homes served via FTTP from the US RBOCs.

Summary
We believe that the decision by the British Broadcasting Corporation to spin off BBC Technology presents a rare and unique opportunity for one of today’s larger, service-oriented companies to gain a leadership position serving the global community of professional television broadcasters.

The BBC Technology group presents a unique mix of assets.

First, the BBC Technology group provides IT services for 28,000 computers and 35,000 telephones to the BBC. This IT services business contract comes with the BBC Technology group

Second, it provides a "point of entry" into the emerging area of high-end television broadcast services. They provide a wide range of in-depth services, from the design, specification, and construction of new TV broadcast facilities, and extend into providing "out sourced" operations support and management services of these facilities.

Third, it "comes equipped" with the London Media Gateway, and other infrastructure assets that can be operated to provide video transmission services to broadcast companies and, eventually, to major enterprises and government agencies.

Summary
In-Stat/MDR’s sixth annual survey of fifty US Cable TV system operators shows that total Cable TV subscriber growth is flattening out, and long-term revenue gains are contingent upon the introduction of, and expansion of, new digital video, data, and voice services.

Most respondents reported that penetration of their Digital Cable TV services is currently between 20% and up to 39%. Cable operators believe that they can eventually achieve 50%, or higher, “take rates” for their ever-expanding menu of digital services.

High Definition TV (HDTV) is more widely available than Video-On-Demand (VOD) services. Personal Video Recorder (PVR) services are also experiencing fast-growth. Twenty-nine respondents plan to be providing HDTV, twenty-two plan to be offering VOD, and nineteen plan to be offering PVR services within 12 months.

CableLabs developed the CableCARD specification to enable a device to decode encrypted, or scrambled, “content” delivered from Cable TV systems. Seven respondents reported that they plan to support CableCARD devices on their systems within the next 12 months, indicating industry awareness and emerging plans to use CableCARD products.
