BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has hinted that the company could release new hardware during the current fiscal year.

The executive told CNET that the firm has plans for a mid-range phone running BlackBerry 10, as well as a mystery device that will take the operating system to "another level".

He said: "There's one new product I'm really excited about, but I can't really share it. It takes BlackBerry 10 to another level in terms of the user experience."

The company formerly known as Research in Motion unveiled its new OS at the end of January, along with two handsets - the high-end BlackBerry Z10 and the physical keyboard-equipped Q10.

Heins said that the firm plans to eventually offer three levels of phone, with both touchscreen and QWERTY devices available at each tier.

BlackBerry has also announced that there are now more than 100,000 apps available for the Z10 on its BlackBerry World storefront.
