Brought computer to store where it was bought as instructed by Asus (they deemed the store an authorized repair center). However, turns out that the store is just a processing center and they are sending it to ASUS for service after insuring that it is not a virus or software conflict. Technician at store told me that if it is not a hardware issue they will send it back with penalty. Tech checked hard drive on diagnostics as he said that sometimes a failing hd could cause sudden shutdowns. He thinks it might be the motherboard may be defective. He said that it was best to make sure it was a problem that comes under warranty such as a hardware issue.

From the techie comments it sounds like Asus is not an easy company to deal with. Examples: He circled about 100 times the price on the copy of my receipt proving it was my computer. He said they have been known to just return it if they do not clearly see price and proof of purchase. As well if they deem it a non-hardware issue they send back the laptop and charge the customer $50 for shipping and handling. Is that what they also do if they can't figure out the problem? Other little hints told me this could be a long road to nowhere. I hope I am wrong but that poor thing lying in pieces already and barely 3 months old augurs badly for a long and prosperous life of service.
