Find the other guy first and kill him to death. Which is exactly what the observation balloons used in the War of Northern Aggression did: Found him first. Oh, the technology has changed, no doubt, but the goal remains the same.
While the focus here seems to be Afghanistan or Iraq- wide open country, either flat or mountainous, but wide-open just the same- other theaters must be considered: urban, jungle, maritime.
It's the age-old battle between warhead and armor. In the end the warhead usually wins...
