Win for King of Prussia firm

InterDigital Communications said it had been awarded $252 million in a case against Nokia.

Inquirer Staff Writer

InterDigital Communications Corp. of King of Prussia said yesterday it had won an arbitration ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce totaling up to $252 million to be paid by cell-phone company Nokia Oyj of Finland.

William J. Merritt, InterDigital's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement that to enforce the decision, InterDigital would also sue Nokia in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The money is for royalties InterDigital says it is owed based on sales of Nokia products that use InterDigital-licensed technology.

InterDigital said the arbitration court's decision could also affect a pending arbitration dispute with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

InterDigital had profits of $89,000 on revenue of $104 million in 2004, and a profit of $34 million on revenue of $115 million in 2003.

Officials at Nokia did not return phone calls yesterday. Nokia spokesman Bill Plummer told Bloomberg News his company would comment on the ruling after studying it.

InterDigital derives most of its revenue from licensing technologies it develops to makers of telecommunications equipment. It employs more than 300 people, including about 140 in King of Prussia.

InterDigital stock did not trade yesterday, pending the announcement in late afternoon. In after-hours trading, it was up 23 percent to $21.50.
