I have a go pro hero 2 (I know the black is better but my wife wont let me buy a new camera every year). I generally use it for underwater work. It is the first thing I was going to attach to my newest project- home build uav. 
The cameras are built for actions sports and can take a beating.
I have a CMOS censor in my 5d Mark II. Not sure if you were talking about wide area surveillance or target tracking. I cant affod to pull it and add it to my ISR package.
