Yes, if you are in Category View you have to click on Performance and Maintenance but if you are in classic view it is as I said, either way the user likes to view things.

As far as apple and adobe it all depends on if you want them to update by themselves and how often. Me, I like to update my own stuff so that it doesn't do it when I am busy doing stuff.
