That is how it works actually, it shows who was #1 through out the season showing your #1 in PGA, the fedex cup comes down to an actual tournament like the masters where anyone can come out on top and those with more pts have a head start.

There is a reason they list the regular season fedex cup regular season winners...

It's like:

The Presidents' Trophy awarded to the NHL's regular season champion with most wins.
The Warren C. Giles Trophy for the MLB's NL best season record.
The William Harridge Trophy for the MLB's AL best record etc

we all know things can change in a tournament for exmaple the Yankees and Nationals who won both didnt even make it to the world series, regardless it shows their status in the MLB.

It's also a lot more meaningful in a non team sport, compare it to boxing you can have a great record and lose 2 big matches like Manny, but have a career of wins and success showing your still considered #1 or #2 in the sport due to your success throughout the year..

and thats exactly why fedex shows the 2012 regular season points winners on PGA.com, the tourny is a 4 day event while the points are several meaningful months of compiled wins and standings remain very important to who is ranked #1
