Well I got his puter going again using the restore program.So I still dont know exactly what the problem was.I found the troubleshooting program to be no help.In addition I found the XP system on his HP to be significantly different to the one on my Dell.His processor is an Athlon but it looked to me like HP has massaged XP making it harder to find the settings.
