This statement misleads novice investors that don't understand the cash flows statement and what that number means. Cash is fluid throughout the quarter (i.e. fluctuates in value throughout quarter). Cash comes in (through revenue, investment returns, etc.) and cash is expensed (through general expenses, paying down liabilities, etc.).

The number on the financial statement represents the difference in the cash coming in and the cash going out (i.e. it is a time-specific single value). The cash flows will show that at some time during that particular quarter the value may have been much higher than the point in time value calculated and commonly misrepresented on message boards.

The arguement that the company only has $4,000 cash to work with to make acquisitions happen and continue business operations throughout any given quarter is laughable.
