Reds,In essence yes a transistor is a switch, the words are kind of, sort of interchangeable, but that doesn’t mean that the switch that they are working on is for an optical computers transistor there are many other uses/needs for an optical switch to change/modify the signal which in turn helps direct it to where it needs to go. I’m not even close to being qualified in this area but as I understand it, that in the end the reason why optical computing will be so much faster (in some areas not all) is that when you combine it/filter it through an array of SLM’s (which is what Turpin is working on) and because photons do not interfere with each other numerous comparisons can be performed simultaneously.

Again I am not qualified, not even close to discussing the engineering behind an optical computer; the information above is just my understanding of how one would work. That would be a good question to ask Greenlee or as Buzzy points out Hochberg and Prather could wander down the street and answer it.
