The server research firms (IDC, Gartner) show Itanium server shipments at a little over 5,000 per quarter. It is kind of hard to reconcile that with 75K Itaniums shipped.

I would like some proof of this IDC server unit claim other
than some random comment from a Sun engineer touting
his Opteron boxes.

According to IPF basher Ashlee Vance

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/28/itanium_04_sales/

IDC said 33,600 IPF servers worth $1.4B were sold in 2004.
Given that IPF server revenue in 2Q05 was nearly double
the same period last year the only way only ~5000 servers
were sold in Q2 2005 would be if IPF server ASP went up
by about 2.6x from 2004 overall to 2Q05.
