The other thing that strikes me about this is that I doubt ATT waited 2-3 years for a final granting of a patent before putting this out there because they know that if they sit on their butts and do nothing during that lengthy process the market will pass them by.

If there is anything to protect and they have their application in firirst citing all the relevant prior art they are good to go and are putting it out in the market. Can you imagine them holding onto this as a "secret" for several years in a time of rapid technology change and losing their advantage?
