vero: The "new databar" has been around for 15 years.

The 1D code was originally called reduced space symbology, or RSS. RSS was widely adopted by the pharmaceutical industry for logistics systems, not POS.

Existing scanning systems could be easily adapted to read QR codes. However, that would eliminate the ability to use QR codes on packaging for purposes other than tracking. Otherwise, a checker would get a beep but it would error out.
