The new "databar" standard code GS1 has been pushing contemplates the possibility of adding attached to it a datamatrix code. The new POS systems being implemented are image scanning (or 2d barcode ready) capable. The healthcare industry is adopting datamatrix across the whole chain.
It is coming....
For those interested in digging more here is a video from GS1, very interesting, eBay is one of the panelist. It is very long...1 1/2 hour video but worth watching.
