Watts,

Thanks for posting the injection molding cost worksheet.

We're very close in our estimates of 1 cycle or 100 grams of raw material.

I have it at $5.85 versus your $4.53 for 100 grams.

He're how I arrived at $5.85.

I calculated with the alloy composition of liquidmetal being:

(Zr,Ti)a(Ni,Cu)b(Be)c

Atomic percentages
a 40-75
b 5-50
c 5-50

I think the weight percentages of each element are:

Element........Weight %
Zirconium.......62.60
Titanium.........11.00
Nickel..............9.80
Copper...........13.20
Beryllium..........3.40
Sum.............100.00

To double check that these weight percentages make sense, I calculated the Atomic% of each element and came up with:

Element........Atomic %
Zirconium.......41.14%
Titanium.........13.78%
Nickel..............10.01%
Copper...........12.45%
Beryllium..........22.62%
Sum.............100.00%

or

(Zr,Ti)54.92(Ni, Cu)22.46(Be)22.62

So the weight %'s check out if the atomic composition is correct.

I have the following as the current cost/lb of raw:

Element........Cost/lb
Zirconium.......$16.657
Titanium.........$12.225
Nickel..............$7.2015
Copper...........$3.3893
Beryllium..........$402.426

Given the weight percentages previously mentioned, liquidmetal works out to:

$26.61/lb or .05688/g

with a cycle feed rate of 100 grams and a solidification shrinkage rate of .2%, you're using 99.8 grams a cycle.

This gives us a raw material cost of $5.85 per cycle.

If you can get 4 units per cycle, the raw material cost is only $1.46 per unit.

On a side note, while perusing Materions website, I can across something that caught my attention.

Take a look at the picture on this link. Anything standout??? How about the girl holding an iPad!!!!
