Primary care MD's most likely only do a flexible sigmoidoscopy which only looks at the distal portion of the colon where most but not all polyps occur. I know of no primary care MD that does a complete colonscopy but plenty do fexible sigmoidoscopy in their office. Gastro's do a complete colonsopy with Diprovan requiring anesthesia monitoring of the patient.
Also removal of precancerous polyps is likely far easier by gastroenterologists due to the experience factor.
Despite the study being from Canada where practices may be different than the US, I suspect that these two findings account for the observed differences
