Thermal extraction is great for shallow wells and tars sands. Not good for much else. Draw backs to steam injection are numerous. One is the availability of water. Massive amounts of water are required for steam extraction. Water that is in short supply in many areas that have shallow wells. Like, oh, say California's Kern county. CO2 injection has surpassed steam injection since 2006.

Speaking of California, one of very few places shallow enough for steam injection... Kern county has banned steam injections since a sink hole opened up, killing someone last year.

Again, nothing new or ground breaking here. But it sure sounds good when they slap the "environmentally friendly" label on it!
