Your assumption about what would happen without bid whackers, I think is a flawed assumption. There would not be more bidders to push the stock further faster - bid whackers sell for a reason and generally that reason is they have seen the slow down and stop ahead before others. Holders generally have to hold because they didn't see that warning sign ahead and hold through the dip and until the stock comes back.
