STOCKHOLM, Feb 10 (Reuters) - The start of a trial in a mobile technology patent dispute between InterDigital (NasdaqNM:IDCC - News) of the United States and Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson (Stockholm:ERICb.ST - News) has been postponed until May 15, Ericsson said on Monday.
The lawsuit concerning mobile phone technology patents had been due to start on Monday. It has been dragging on since 1993 when the companies filed suits against each other.

Interdigital also sued Motorola (NYSE:MOT - News) for patent infringement, but lost

The lawsuit concerning mobile phone technology patents had been due to start on Monday. It has been dragging on since 1993 when the companies filed suits against each other.

Interdigital also sued Motorola (NYSE:MOT - News) for patent infringement, but lost.

Loss-making Ericsson, the world's biggest producer of mobile networks, would not say which patents the alleged infringement concerned, what its damage liability would be if it lost, or why it had taken 10 years to bring the case to trial.

"There is nothing new, except that the date of the trial has been postponed to May 15," said Ericsson spokesman Peter Olofsson. "I don't know why, it was not on Ericsson's request. We believe there was no patent infringement by us."

Swedish business daily Dagens Industri said on Monday InterDigital demanded licence fees of between 2.5 and five percent of Ericsson's handset sales from the early 1990s and between 1.5 and 3.5 percent of mobile network sales in that period.

If InterDigital wins the case, Ericsson could face payments of tens of billions of crowns, the daily reported.

The paper reported that Ericsson was confident it would win because the technology which InterDigital has patented had been known in the industry before the patent filing was made. Ericsson shares did not react to the report, trading flat at 6.35 crowns at 0912 GMT.
