Actually the answer he provided went in much more detail explaining what reimbursement (travel, meals, ect...) were paid by the company, and I'm sure if you re-read his response you will understand he mentioned much more than what you suggested above in your post.
It would seem to me that anything associated with material and equiptment necessary to do the demos (paint, tar, glue, ect...) would qualify as legitimate expenses. If he was refering to any form of compensation I'm sure he would have called it just that, but you are welcome to continue to fish in this pond if you wish.
