IMHO - this is not a particularly well constructed sentence and thus perhaps the misinterpretation:
They find that after November 2009, shareholders lost $5-12 billion relative to those firms that Tiger Woods did not endorse."
The original wording of the Knittel and Stango abstract being much clearer:
"We estimate that in the days beginning with Tiger Woods’ recent car accident and ending with his announced “inde?nite leave” from golf, shareholders of companies that Mr.Woods endorses lost $5-12 billion in wealth.
Although I have serious doubts with the accuracy of these figures and the conclusion of this abstract ... there can be no doubt that there was some significant financial losses associated with the whole affair.
