Technology News

To date, the development of cell phone programming has been driven by sometimes chaotic market forces. "As with any rapidly evolving technology, it tends to be supply driven," Yankee Group analyst John Jackson told NewsFactor. "And -- broadly speaking -- we're still in that paradigm."

Yet Jackson added that JTWI likely will counteract this tendency. "I view this as a positive step, something's that overdue.... It has the potential framework for facilitating the future development of industry standards."

Going Forward

Sun's JTWI not only codifies specific current standards, but also outlines new specifications to be included over the next year.

The guidelines are like "hitting the reset button," Aberdeen Group analyst Isaac Ro told NewsFactor. "It's like saying, 'All right, we've done a lot of work here, let's coalesce the best of the best -- establish some standards and see where we can go.'"

Major Support

JTWI has some heavyweight backing from such companies as Nokia (news - web sites) (NYSE: NOK - news), Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) and Ericsson (news - web sites) (Nasdaq: ERICY - news). Although compliance with the new guidelines is voluntary, this powerful support -- these three companies make 60 percent of all cell phones -- suggests Sun's JTWI will become an industry standard.

Additionally, many major carriers support the initiative, including Sprint PCS and T-Mobile, the United Kingdom's Vodafone and Japan's NTT DoCoMo.
