What rights to shareholders have to information concerning the business dealings of a publicly owned company?

Don't shareholders have the right to know if there is any interest in products, or if deals have been made or are in process of being made?
Not specifics of any kind, or names of companies involved, but just general knowledge of whether the company they invested in has a viable product.

I realize some companies would demand secrecy for competitive reasons, but a general positive message to shareholders that deals are done or in the works would do wonders for confidence in their investments. Too much to ask?
