MIPS Technologies and Intrinsic-ID Team to Add Top-Level Security to Mobile Platforms
Demonstrating Secure Content Provisioning on MIPS-Based(TM) Android 4.0 Tablet at Mobile World Congress

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, Feb. 21, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS - News), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital home, networking and mobile applications, and Intrinsic-ID, a worldwide leader in security solutions delivering semiconductor IP and embedded software products, announced they are teaming to deliver top-level security for MIPS-Based(TM) mobile devices. Through the collaboration, MIPS licensees and OEMs can enable their platforms with compelling security-centric applications, such as media content protection, secure payment transactions and secure cloud storage.

Intrinsic-ID's security IP is based on patented Hardware Intrinsic Security (HIS) technology, and has been publicly endorsed by leading companies in the fields of smartcards, automotive, FPGA and government applications. MIPS and Intrinsic-ID will demonstrate the Intrinsic-ID solution on a MIPS-Based Android(TM) 4.0 tablet during Mobile World Congress, being held February 27 -- March 1, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.

"We are delighted that our relationship with MIPS Technologies can bring a new level of security to mobile phones and tablets," said Tony Picard, vice president of business development at Intrinsic-ID. "By teaming up with MIPS Technologies, we can facilitate fast-track integration of security IP in mobile platforms for our common customers. By using our combined IP offering, these customers can deliver Android platforms that enable secure media provisioning and anti-cloning."

Demonstration at Mobile World Congress

The demonstration in MIPS' demo suite at Mobile World Congress will show a MIPS-Based Android 4.0 tablet using Intrinsic-ID's Confidentio IP product to secure the provisioning of media content from the cloud to the tablet. Confidentio is the world's first encryption module that has built-in key storage functionality without requiring embedded non-volatile memory.

The demonstration will highlight the unique anti-cloning and anti-tamper characteristics of Intrinsic-ID's HIS technology -- also referred to as 'Physical Unclonable Function' (PUF). With PUF, secret keys (analogous to silicon biometrics or fingerprints) are extracted when needed from the hardware properties of a chip. Attackers have nothing to find because no key is present in the power-down state, as is the case traditionally when keys are permanently stored in non-volatile-memory.
