More than anything I think this announcement demonstrates the viability of a number of technologies that support the seamless transision of a call in progress from circuit switched to IP environments.

Probably equally important, and also relevant to Calypso is that the format in which this technology was deployed appears to be compliant with specifications that are likely to be incorporated into the 3GPP release 8.

For those of you unfamiliar with this set of standards, much like the IEE defines standards for things such as Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g and WiMAX 802.16, etc.) the 3GPP working group is developing specifications to support interoperability among carriers and thus networks.

Compliance with the standards is essential if an operator, carrier, handset manufacturer, switch manufacturer, etc. wants to offer ubiquitous connectivity for customers both within and across their networks. With all the different carriers and manufacturers, this interoperability is vitally important or the utility of each network will be limited to subscribers on that network.

This is something that has puzzled me, actually. If Calypso is intent on deploying ASNAP as a ubiquitous standard, why did they not participate in 3GPP and have a hand in drafting the specifications?
