I would maintain that the long term effect, if any, of a split is not due to the split itself or the perceptions of it, but rather to the factors that motivated the company to do the split.

The split is an effect or coincident with something else that is the actual cause of following changes in SP.

You can test that idea by looking at companies that had different results on their SP from the same kind of splits. The differences will have been determined by the events surrounding the splits. If your company is doing a split, don't just look at the split, look at WHY it's doing it.
