NEC Computers has added three models to its range of business laptops. Hardly cutting-edge in terms of design or features, the Versa C250 (£569 ex. VAT), Versa M350 (£572 ex. VAT) and Versa P550 (£620 ex. VAT) were developed to help businesses dramatically reduce their total cost of ownership by offering an extended product life-cycle, according to the company. For instance, they support common accessories and components (all use the same chassis), offer a decent level of connectivity, and integrate 'innovative' security solutions.

According to NEC, the three products are designed to meet the specific usage needs of different company departments such as marketing, finance and sales. In response to customer concerns about security, NEC now offers a range of options besides the standard Kensington Lock Slot. For instance, there's now a fingerprint security option, Kensington anti-theft cable, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip and a Stoptrack anti-theft protection label. In addition, NEC's Safeboot solution option promises to ensure maximum data protection for these laptops.

The Versa M350 and Versa P550 feature the latest Intel Sonoma architecture. Equipped with Intel Centrino Mobile technology, the two computers have an Intel Pentium M 730 processor with 2MB cache (or Celeron M 350 with 1MB cache), 5400rpm hard disk drive with up to an 80GB capacity, DDR333 memory and the possibility to integrate a dual-layer DVD burner.

The systems also come with a V.92 modem, optional Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, and 10/100/1000Mbit/s Ethernet. Connectivity options include four USB 2.0 ports, as well as a single FireWire and infrared port. Graphics are catered for by ATI's PCIe-based Radeon X300 chipset and a 15in. 1400x1050-pixel TFT display.
