Shorting is destructive and shouldn't be allowed. Sure it can generate short term results for traders and those in the know, but the idea of markets is to help companies succeed, not fail. Shorting (many cases illegal) keeps extreme downward pressure on startups, when it is they who need stabile pricing more than anyone..many firms go public to raise revenues, and it's crap that coordinated efforts by veterans in the shorting game can take advantagenofnother traders and the startup companies. Small business is a key driver of economic growth, and many concepts can't even get out of the gate because of shorting crap. Hopefully people realize this sooner than later. Imagine a world where those short $$$ get spent to actually build companies. Stocks would rise across the board significantly IMO if you remove the "manufactured" downward pressure which allows for broader economic gains on securities. PE ratios would almost certainly be closer to normal too.

Competition in the marketplace is challenging enough without people directly betting against you.
