You can say whatever you want but when a movie's own producers say it's a flop, guess what? It's a flop. Studios almost never admit to financial loss in public. They usually downplay huge flops, so for an executive to admit this publicly means the loss is of HUGE proportions.

Even though it made what you think is a lot of money for a movie with such a huge budget you're not taking into account how much of that gross revenue goes to the cinemas themselves. As each week goes by the percentage a cinema gets for each ticket sold increases higher and higher. That's why anybody with any knowledge of the movie industry knows the rule of thumb is each movie needs to gross at least twice its budget to break even.

As I said before just because a movie grossed x amount doesn't mean x amount worth of movie goers liked the movie. Being that the movie flopped chances are whatever marketplace there is for merchandise will be very small, as in not large enough to make a difference or to get the company out of the red.
