Fumbling the Future is a fascinating read if it's still in print. I was in the area in the late 70's (I was at the Stanford AI Lab) and knew some of the peripheral players at SRI and PARC.

For anyone who hasn't yet seen Steve Job's 2005 Commencement Address at Stanford, you are missing something really special:
