I think you are right about the competition. There will always be competition. It will not be easy to compete with KBLB though. I think by the time anyone gets around to getting bacteria to make spider silk we will be in production for years. I don't really see anyone willing to spend the time competing with us if we have spider silk already.

This brings us back to the "better" topic. There is only one reason that KBLB exists. That is because spider silk is "better" then silkworm silk.

Fast forward 2 years. KBLB is in full production and they get 100% of the silk market.
Why would anyone want to attempt to spend millions to produce spider silk to be able to make it no better then what is out there.

Cheaper is a motivation but cheaper is not really a factor. If you use gold as a good example.
Someone builds a machine that turns gold into platinum that is awesome. Gold is cheaper then platinum and the profit makes it reasonable.
Then someone learns to make plutonium from tin. WOW much more profitable but in 1 year plutonium and tin are the same price. There is no longer a demand because the "Cheaper" process took away the thing that made it "Better".

IF they ever do figure out how to make SS in vats we will be out of business and the new guy would lose the profit. The bacteria will be uncontrollable. They will be stuck all over the silk and be getting shipped with the product.Unfortunately for the non evolution people the bacteria would mutate. There would be mutated versions all over china with no IP violations since it is no longer the same bacteria once it evolves a mutation.

All the speculation about competition is premature. As it stands now and for at least a few years is KBLB is the ONLY company out there that have the ability to produce spider silk in quantity.

To me there is no competition until someone can show me a spool of silk. Even if it took them 3 years to make a spool. I don't think anyone has made a spool of spider silk but KBLB and the poor fools who collected spiders for the 1 piece of cloth made of spider silk. Until then we have no competition worth mentioning.

If I am wrong please show me the silk. (Not a vat full of slime)
