Built in obsolesece is nothing new but that does not always apply. When you talk about something you buy every 10 years or so a lot of things seem to be built to break Like TV sets and appliances. They tend to break just after the warranty expires.

But explain Craftsman or Snap-on tools. You break grandpas old craftsman wrench and you get it replaced for free for life.

Search through any mechanics tool box and you will find most tools they have are like this and very few will be made in china out of crappy metal.

Clothing is not something you buy 1 time in 10 years. If the quality of clothing was not taken under consideration by the consumer then Levi's jeans would never have made it.

In 1872, Levi received a letter from Jacob Davis, a Reno, Nevada tailor. Davis was one of Levi Strauss’ regular customers; he purchased bolts of cloth from the company to use for his own business. In his letter, he told the prosperous merchant about the interesting way he made pants for his customers: he placed metal rivets at the points of strain - pocket corners, and at the base of the button fly. He did this in order to make the pants stronger for the laboring men who were his customers. He wanted to patent this new idea but needed a business partner to get the idea off the ground. So he suggested that the two men take out the patent together (sharing the costs, as well). Levi was enthusiastic about the idea and the patent was granted to both men on May 20, 1873. The blue jean was born.

The famous 501® jean – known at the time simply as “XX” – was soon a best seller, as were the other riveted products Levi and Jacob added to their new manufacturedlines

The Idea that better products wont sell or be used because they wont wear out is just stupid.

Look at the FDA requirement for a new drug. One of the things they look for is for a new drug to work better then what exists now. If it works the same it will not get approval.

This world revolves around improvements. If you really think that good product wont sell then start making clothing out of paper. It will make you rich. I garantee the clothing will need to be purchased every day. How many return customers do you think the "Paper Shirt Co" will have???
