In my role of a Test Engineer, a lot of Pre-Flight preparation was done by simulation. We would take the unit or a replica to a wind tunnel and we would develope computer programs to train the Operators on the how to fly the unit as it was sometimes not visible to the naked eye and we had to use Radar and Telemetry signals for response. These are costly if you do not have a large computer for real time response you have to by time on someone system. Dryden is such a place and will be of great value working out the bugs. The people know what it takes and yes sometime it is slow but you can be sure it will be right. Better to loose one on the computer than one on the ground. You can always start the program over and see your mistakes than do a crash site evaluation.
longtime.
