Not sure I see the problem. And, I assume you mean negative criticism . . .

Just knowing the company posts or reads the post on these boards is an invitation to criticism.

Personally I never want to be involved with FB and shun companies that force interactions with them to go through that venue. Poor strategy on their part. Twitter is insufficiently interactive. An open blog could work, but is that not just reinventing a board except in a more narrowly threaded way ?
I did notice before the "bad idea, lots of death threats" stuff but honestly assumed there must be much more behind that one.
