Muddy Waters SEC litigation hoax

Let me preface this by saying that I don't agree with stock manipulation of any kind. I love good research, but I don't really agree with the idea of profiting off of that research by buying and selling stocks in the companies you are researching and taking advantage of the price swings your research may help cause. Not sure how that is much better than pumpers and paid promoters taking advantage of the information they offer to try to manipulate the share price of a stock.

All that being said I think this SEC litigation against Muddy Waters/Carson Block is a hoax

I looked up litigation release #21053 in the SEC system and it is a different case:

http://www.sec.gov/litigation/litreleases/2009/lr21053.htm

Litigation Releases go in numerical order and #21053 happened on May 20, 2009 and it involved the Matthew Brown, Pawel P. Dynkowski stock manipulation ring.

If I had to guess who may have invented the hoax I'd say it is somebody connected to one of the three companies named in the fictional litigation release: Sino Forest Corporation, Duoyuan Global Water Inc., or Orient Paper Inc.

Impersonating a government regulatory agency is a pretty ballsy thing to do and could land somebody in a lot of trouble.

Here is the link to the primary source of the fake litigation release according to the article you provided:

Looks like it may have already been removed, but not before kicking off a wave of secondary reports.
