Moving up the food chain with Fidelity gets a little more logical information today.

"I am sorry for any confusion you experienced related to the GVRP stock split. Fidelity credits accounts for stock splits on the ex-dividend date, which is 5/23/05 for GVRP. The new GVRP shares will appear on your History page on this date."
