..addendum :

A friend of mine ( Dr. in Marketing ) used to say "There's only one thing that motivates in business, and that's 'making money' "

The continual downward price-spiral in the PC business caused effectively by the price-bands remaining constant whilst new product are introduced, means that "holding products in stock" is a dangerous business.

It's no wonder that Intel has the "extra" money to spend on marketing, rebates etc. - they set their "public" prices high and have loads of room to manipulate/support sales efforts.

The aforementioned Dr. got himself a wholesale-licence for a well known Company called 'XXX' way back in the mid-80's.
He got 50%+ discount from XXX.
XXX products were being sold in the market at rediculously high prices.
All sales people would tell their customers that these products were the Rolls-Royces and therefore expensive.
So what happened ?
Corporate Buyers would get 30%+ discounts - and make themselves look good to their upper management.
Individual private buyers actually payed these silly prices.
Company XXX grew to one of the biggest WW names in the industry.

My point is :
By AMD keeping their prices ALWAYS lower than Intel's, they are not doing anyone a favour , and are harming themselves.
AMD "must" raise they prices egnerally across the board.
The whole supply chain will be thankful.
Corpoarate buyers will be glad to accept bigger discounts ( without harming AMD'S ASPs too much )
etc. etc.

Phil
