The Panama Canal Expansion project won't be completed until 2014. The Strait (s) of Magellan is also ruled out because when Chile exits, there will be a huge hole that will probably fill with water creating all sorts of separate hydraulic issues. Thus, the treacherous Cape Horn route is the only viable alternative.
