Lithium Exploration Group Expands Strategy with Argentine Asset

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Apr 28, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Lithium Exploration Group (OTCBB:LEXG) has released new details on its acquisition of five cateos (mining concessions) in northwest Argentina's Puna Plateau.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to explore the historically productive mineral-rich brines in northwestern Argentina," said Lithium Exploration Group CEO Alex Walsh. "This group of properties is under-explored, but presents a great opportunity for true exploration efforts."

The Puna Plateau, a high-elevation basin on the eastern slopes of the Andes that straddles the Argentina-Chile border, contains a majority of the world's known lithium brine resources due to a variety of geological and climatic factors. Lithium held in near-surface brines is generally the lowest-cost source of lithium production, as a result of the high concentration levels of the metal and the proximity of the brines to the surface. In addition, the Puna Plateau features an arid climate, which facilitates extraction through evaporation.

To date, sampling at Lithium Exploration Group's Salta Project has only been taken from surface water and ground water at 2 and 3 feet below the surface. These crude tests have produced ranges of lithium deposits from 10 to 40 ppm. Based on other salars in the Puna Plateau, the geologists conducting the tests believe that brines at depth will produce higher levels of lithium. The initial exploration efforts will include complete geophysical mapping of the aquifers below the surface and testing the brines at the bottom of the water table to establish mineral estimates for specific sections of the property.

A portion of the Salta Project mineral claims reaches across the foothills of a mountain range that extends into Chile. A large copper mine on the Chile side of the border, across the range from the Lithium Exploration Group claims, has led the company's directors to suggest further exploration for the potential of a copper reserve that would be of future economic interest. "Having the potential of a multi-mineral deposit in a specific mineral claim is exciting to say the least. It gives us the flexibility to expand the project based upon more than just one target mineral," Walsh said.
