dmiller...First of all, Google, Berkshire and any stock over, say, a $5B market cap cannot be easily manipulated by the aforementioned means. With regard to a "double-edged sword", in a zero-sum game you would be correct. Unfortunately, with the current trading "rules", or lack thereof, the down-side edge of the sword is considerably sharper than the upside one. IMO.
