I totally agree that a resignation won't cause trading halt.

It was 10pm Friday in China when CCME was halted. I don't believe that DT announced the resignation at 4pm on Friday after 3 months working together on the 10-K!

It can more likely be some deal was done during the Friday dinner with another party and they decided to halt the stock in prevention of insider info leaking out.
