I have wondered this. In fact, this is what disturbed me about the entire thing from the very first time I watched it. There are both hardware devices and computer based or service provider based methods to record both incoming and outgoing calls. (Trust me on this, I own most of them). If they are NOT in place then you cannot do so in the middle of a call. If they ARE in place than it takes no more than 1-3 seconds to start them. I have not been to China but if they have caller ID than I would have started the recording before even answering. The ONLY way to record this call with such a long delay would be to use the REALLY old technique of having a Y cable and going to a hand held tape or digital recorder which maybe he didn't have next to him and he had someone bring it to him? The problem with that is if he was using this type of technology it is usually very clearly heard in the quality of the recording. Bottom line, I am not buying it. My experience is telling me that he did not record (or include in the public release) the first two minutes intentionally.
