Uh...unless I'm misunderstanding him, that's incorrect. One of Rommel's major problems was lack of gasoline, specifically enough transport trucks to stay up with his tanks.

I'll bet that German geologists knew that there was oil under the sand, but Rommel hardly had the time to build refineries!
