rmarchma, Thanks, that makes sense. I understand that unexercised options are not outstanding shares, that is clear. Not trying to parse words here, but it seems to me the company would still need to have those add'l 1000 shares authorized and available to sell him, therefore they would have to be accounted for.

For example, assume an employee had unexercised stock options to purchase 1,000 shares at a $20 strike price before the split. After a 2 for 1 stock split, the employee's unexercised stock options would be adjusted to 2,000 shares at a $10 per share strike price.
