A UPC is indirect.

The local database issue was successfully challenged in the '048 re-exam. Remember Barkume's odd statement that they knew of no one using a local database?

Prior art remains an issue until a patent expires. A patent owner has an on-going responsibility to submit prior art.

This patent scans a code and reads the output ("the identifier" or indirectly coded index):
12345

The smartphone's application then assembles the identifier into a URL containing a string of information from the "mapping database" showing the server, identifier, platform and location:
www.nst.com/12345/iPhone4/10001

This request URL is sent to the clearinghouse. The clearinghouse then returns a destination ("information") URL to the handset.

A partial indirect is encoded as:
www.nst.com/12345
